Excellent detective work - and thanks for reporting it to help future
users!  I'll have to check the source code to be sure, but I believe
Escape followed by a key is processed as equivalent to Alt-key in order
to support 7-bit systems (terminals/terminal emulators can often be
configured to send this sequence instead of setting the high bit).
Of course it is more efficient to use a single character if possible.

I don't know if you are aware that Professor Nelson was based at the
Sapporo Hyperlab at Hokkaido University before going to Keiodai.
