The Xanadu team did a lot of work on versioning using tree structures;
I'll have to hunt around to find the relevant documentation. See
especially the POOMfilade (Permutation Of Order Matrix Enfilade) which
provides a Variant - to - Invariant address mapping and vice versa.
Invariant addresses are analogous to underlying storage addresses, while
variant addresses are the logical addresses providing one or more
"versions".
