State of alpha-4

Alpha-4 has reached the point where it runs the real orgl test with the
newest (?) table code.  This should be robust against garbage collection,
but I don't have time to really check on this before I leave.
Some combination of hands and berts don't seem to work, so this may make
life awkward for waldo and docs-and-links work.  It's likely that there
is a simple fix to make the hand and bert code work.
